Ritz-G5’s Singapore office celebrates Brazilian Independence Day
On 15th of September, award-winning Brazilian real estate developer, Ritz-G5 celebrated Brazilian Independence Day together with the Embassy of Brazil in Singapore.
The prestigious event took place at the beautiful Marina Mandarin hotel and marked the first time that the Asian office has celebrated Brazil’s Independence Day along with the Embassy of Brazil. International guests were invited to a stunning evening dinner reception with traditional Brazilian entertainment and high calibre speakers.
The event was attended by a number of distinguished VIP guests: Ambassador of Brazil in Singapore, Luis Fernando de Andrade Serra and his wife Mrs. Rosana; CEO of Ritz-G5, Mr. Luiz Fernandes; Managing Director of Ritz-G5 Asia, Mr. Arun Rama and Professor Marco Nobrega.
Brazil gained its independence in 1822 and this national holiday is commonly simply referred to as Sete de Semptembro (September 7th). In Brasília, the celebration is usually attended by 30,000 people each year and takes place at the Ministries Esplanade with a military parade in the presence of the President of Brazil.
In 1500 Portugal claimed the land now known as Brazil, on the arrival of the Portuguese fleet commanded by Pedro Álvares Cabral. The first European settlements were established as early as 1532 and Brazil officially became Portuguese colony in the late 1600s. Brazil was the jewel of the Portuguese colonies as it had a booming economy, abundance of gold and ability to grow sugar cane. During its colonial period Brazil was ruled by the general government which gave the Portuguese crown absolute control over the Latin American nation.
After Napoleon’s announcement of his plans to invade Portugal, the royal family had to flee across the Atlantic to Brazil, along with 10,000 members of the Portuguese court. In 1808 Rio de Janeiro became the capital of Portugal and the entire Portuguese Empire. However, after a series of events and social unrest in the Iberian Peninsula, King John was forced to return to Portugal in 1820 leaving his son, Dom Pedro I as regent to rule Brazil in his absence.
In September 1821, the government of Portugal returned Brazil to its colonial status, thus making Dom Pedro the Governor of Rio de Janeiro. Cortes’ hostility towards Brazil started to grow and soon Dom Pedro was ordered to return to Portugal. He denounced the order making a declaration known as “Dia do Fico” (“I will remain”). After a failed attempt to surround Pedro’s army, Portuguese troops were forced to retreat back to Portugal and Pedro began to focus on creating a stable government, rallying supporters of Brazil’s independence. Despite the lack of support from the new government in Portugal, Dom Pedro I declared Brazil as an independent country in 1822 and was later crowned as emperor.
